The Project
The Teaching & Learning Centre is a flagship building for the Edgbaston campus expansion project at the University of Birmingham. The building includes 10 separate seminar rooms, a café, individual study areas, a 500 seater traditional lecture theatre and a unique 250-seater lecture theatre at the centre of the building.
One of the more intricate and impressive features of the building (and any that we’ve worked on) is the Sto Ventec central ‘crystal’ glass feature system that Sage were heavily involved in the design, supply and installation of. The Hexagonal designed glass cladding system ascend through the core of the structure and summits out of the top of the building whilst being supported by a steel framing system. Through considered planning, design and communication, we were able to deliver the feature on time and as per the specification.
To the external walls, we installed TI Tiles natural stone panels around the whole building onto a Metsec steel framing system with helping hand brackets to support the panels. We also installed Sotech’s Aluminium Optima Bronze Anolok cladding system to the exterior of the building. To the roof and plant area, we installed Kingspan composite panels with an XL forte finish.

Sage BEC takes responsibility for the greenhouse gases we cannot avoid emitting by using the Climatecare offset calculator to determine how many tonnes of CO2 we produce in our trading year. To achieve Carbon Neutral status we pay Climatecare to reduce the equivalent amount of CO2 in another part of the world by investing that money into emission reduction projects replacing fuel hungry inefficient technologies with efficient low-carbon technologies in developing countries. They provide a wide range of advice and information to the industry with the assistance of its members, and through our own membership, we hope to not only gain improved technical information and knowledge relating to building envelopes, but use our own experience to share this information with others in the industry, creating a much improved workflow.

ISO 14001 is focussed around the environmental aspects of the organisation, with the core principle of continual improvement being the driving force behind environmental development.
